Malaysia & World’s number 1 badminton player Lee Chong Wei is hinting on retirement, and the World Championship 2017 might be his last competition.

When asked about his plan for retirement, he said: “Yes, I am sure that this will be my last Olympic, however I won’t be retiring immediately, and I will still participate in 2017’s World Championship.”

After losing to Chen Long 18 – 21 in both games of Olympic Final, Chong Wei said he will be retiring after competing in next year’s World Badminton Championship.

When asked will he be participating in 2020’s Tokyo Olympic, he replied “I don’t think so.” He reconfirmed that he this will be his last Olympic, and will stay for around one more year to. “After that, I will have make a decision to stay or retire depending on the performance of new generation badminton players. However, for now, I’m plan to only staying until the next World Championship.”

For the soon-to-be 34 years old Chong Wei, participate in next Olympic might seems to be a far-fetched idea. However to challenge the Place as a Champion in World Championship next year is still possible.

When asked about Chen Long, Chong Wei admits that it is a loss he have to accept. “I have to accept it, no matter it is because of my nervousness or mistake, it is all on me. I am impressed that Chen Long is playing better than me, fair and square. I have ended up with Olympic Silver for the third time, that’s a pity if you ask anyone.”

When asked if it is the previous 83 minutes long match with Lin Dan that wore him out, he shook his head. “There is no problem with my stamina, Chen Long has indeed performed very well. In the first game when I was leading 11 – 7, Chen Long immediately changed his strategy, and I’ve made a few mistakes as well, and coming to the second game, he grown more confident with his play style and strategy.”

For now, he just wish to rest for a while. “I just wish to go home and meet with my children, I miss my children and family. This is the longest time I out from Malaysia for a competition. I have been staying here more than one month.”
