Gareth Southgate waits in limbo for the England job, Donald Trump prepares for the presidency of the USA, and Premier League football returns after the international break.

But with everything that’s been going on, the last round of Premier League matches seems like years ago, doesn’t it?

Well no matter; we’re here to catch you up.

1. Tottenham remain unbeaten, just

After the north London derby, both teams might have felt aggrieved to have missed out on a win, but a draw for Spurs ensured their unbeaten start to the season extends to 11 games.

That’s a bit less impressive when you consider that they have won five and drawn six, but it’s 11 games nonetheless.

Spurs sit fifth, having drawn more than half of their fixtures so far, and have in fact tied their last four games, scoring just three goals. They’ll hope for better against West Ham this weekend.

2. Liverpool are frightening the pants off everyone

(Dominic Lipinski/PA)

Jurgen Klopp’s team currently sit top of the league, having scored 30 goals in 11 games and earned 26 points in the process.

It’s a frightening prospect for the rest of the league, who are finally beginning to see the success that Dortmund benefited from during Jurgen’s time there.

Liverpool have conceded more goals than anyone in the top seven however (14), and in fact have a worse defensive record than newly promoted Middlesbrough.

Having scored zero, two, four and six in their last four games though, could we see eight when they take on Southampton?

3. As are Chelsea, for that matter…

(John Walton/PA)

Since losing 3-0 at Arsenal, Chelsea have won five out of five and scored 16 goals without reply. Arsene Wenger, what have you done?

Antonio Conte’s side look to have clicked, and the result is that the Blues have moved up to second, just a point behind Klopp’s Liverpool.

Eden Hazard and Antonio Conte are scoring freely once more, while N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic are rediscovering the title-winning form they have demonstrated in season’s gone by. Frightening.

4. Burnley and Middlesbrough scored last minute goals

(Dave Howarth/PA)

Burnley felt aggrieved after Arsenal’s recent last-minute winner at Turf Moor some weeks back, but Ashley Barnes’ 94th minute winner against Crystal Palace will have gone some way towards fixing that.

Having been 2-0 up, Burnley conceded twice as Palace levelled the scores, before a fine counter attack from the home side led to Barnes smashing the winner in and taking Burnley up to ninth.

Meanwhile Manchester City v Middlesbrough on paper looked to be one of the most predictable results of the season. Not so, after Sergio Aguero’s opening goal was cancelled out by a sublime Marten de Roon header in injury time, earning the Boro an unlikely point.

5. Stoke have self-righted

(Richard Sellers/Empics Sport)

After losing four games in a row at the start of the season, it was beginning to look like Stoke had croaked.

But 11 games in and those results are a distant memory. The Potters are now unbeaten in six games, and have won three of their last four, moving up to 12th, three points from the relegation zone.

Key to that resurgence is the renaissance of one man, Joe Allen, who has scored four Premier League goals with his new club. Go Joe.

6. Tom Heaton continues to impress

(Richard Sellers/Empics Sport)

Forget the goals he conceded at Wembley against Spain for a moment, and instead remember that Tom Heaton has made a whopping 60 saves in the Premier League this season; 18 more than anybody else.

The Burnley stopper has only kept three clean sheets so far this season, but his acrobatics in goal have been nothing short of miraculous. He made 11 saves against Manchester United at Old Trafford, as Burnley held on for a miraculous point.

7. Is Jack Wilshere on the road to recovery?

(Steve Paston/PA)

When Jack Wilshere moved to Bournemouth on loan at the end of the 2016 summer transfer window, many called the 24-year-old’s decision into question.

But the move looks to be paying dividends for the England midfielder, who has appeared in 10 Premier League matches in a row, start in seven in a row, and completed 90 minutes in each of the Cherries’ last three games.

Credit must go to Eddie Howe, who has slowly reintroduced Wilshere to first-team football, but would the Arsenal fan favourite ever make the move permanent?

8. Leicester City are a bit rubbish

(John Walton/PA)

We finish with a sad story. Reigning champions Leicester City are already 14 points off the championship pace, and sit just two points above the relegation zone.

The Foxes are cruising in the Champions League, but Jamie Vardy hasn’t scored in seven PL games, Danny Drinkwater looks like he misses Kante, and Kasper Schmeichel is out with a broken hand.

Claudio Ranieri’s side will hope they don’t fall into the relegation zone, or their title victory will fade very quickly into memory.
