The athletes

More than 10,000 athletes will compete in Rio, Brazil. This year, there are 42 Olympic sports category in 306 events over the course of 19 days of competition that will yield 136 medals for women, 161 for men and nine mixed medals.

The medals

Fun fact about Olympic gold medals, they are not actually, made entirely out of gold. A minimal amount of gold is plated on silver instead. The medals weighted around 500 grams, which will cost $23,500 if it is made entirely out of gold. Hence, plating silver medal with tiny amount of Brazil gold can drop the cost to around $ 600.

New Sports

There were two open spots for sports in the 2016 Games. Baseball and softball were dropped in 2005 but tried to return. Applying to be added to the Games also were karate, squash, golf, roller sports and rugby. In 2009, the Olympics decided to add rugby sevens and golf. A new Olympic golf course was built in a suburb of Rio. Golf was last an Olympic sport in 1904.
