Manchester United has not won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, and finished 15 points behind Leicester City last season.
A fifth place in last season also meant that there is no way for Manchester United to be Champion next season. But Mourinho want his team to aim for something much higher rather than returning as Champion.
He said that “I want to be champion,”
“A big evolution in the team, without being champion as somebody else was very strong, would not be a disappointment. ”
“But to say before the season starts that the top four is the target? The top four is not the target. We want to play to be champions.”
Mourinho was given three years contract, same with Louis van Gaal left the club in May. Vice-chairman Ed Woodward will be hoping he has found the right manager to help bring United back to the top, but Mourinho revealed the club hierarchy have not given him any specific targets he must meet by the end of the season.
Mourinho says “There is no ultimatum,”
“The message from the owners and Mr Woodward was: get your three years, do your work, improve the team and bring us back where we belong during a three-year period. ”
“My message was that I wanted to win the title in the first season.”
Big ambition there Mourinho! We look forward for you to bring Manchester United back to their glory!
