England face Russia on June 11, 2016 for their opening match of the UEFA Euro 2016 at Stade Velodrome in France. Here is our pre-match analysis.
The Three Lions come into this game with the youngest squad in the tournament and are the favorites to win this cracker of a match. The game could see the likes of Tottenham Hotspurs’ Dele Alli and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford making their Euro debut.
Roy Hodgson’s men secured a 100% record win in their qualification group and had the fewest goals conceded in the tournament. They then played international friendlies against some of Europe’s bigwigs such as Spain and the Netherlands where they lost the two games, but beat world champions Germany and Euro 2016 hosts France.
England have a young and promising squad that consists of players who have impressed at their respective clubs. For example, Jamie Vardy was instrumental in Leicester’s league win last season, Dele Alli was in superb form for Spurs, steering them to third-place finish, while Marcus Rashford has been the talk of the Premier League thanks to his goal-mindedness both for his club and country.
England players celebrate the goal from Marcus Rashford against Australia in a previous international friendly
Under Leonid Slutsky, Russia won their last four qualification matches, but seem to have set their feet off the pedal after booking a ticket to France. They have since failed to win their last three international friendlies, having lost two and drawn their last game against Serbia. England have had some good preparations and you can bank on them to win this match against the Russians.
